Even you have never heard of benzene, you have no doubt heard of the diseases associated with it. Benzene is a harmful toxic substance known to cause leukemia, Aplastic anemia and myelodysplastic syndrome. Two recent lawsuits in the news have brought more awareness to the dangers of benzene exposure.
In one lawsuit, a Louisiana man filed a lawsuit against Texaco for his exposure to benzene in the early 1970’s. As reported at louisianarecord.com, the Texaco delivered the benzene to his workplace where he worked in vats filled with benzene. Today, he suffers from multiple myeloma. The benzene caused damage to his bone marrow and blood forming organs.
In another lawsuit, a jury awarded the family of a Nevada truck driver $7.5 million who died from benzene exposure in May 2009. The man died from myelodysplastic syndrome linked to the benzene, according to a report at aboutlawsuits.com. From 2002 to 2008, he loaded and delivered gasoline, which contained 3 percent benzene. The jury found that his employer failed to monitor the benzene exposure and did not warn employees of the risks associated with benzene.
Benzene has been associated with several forms of cancer, including leukemia. Often times, victims are unaware of their exposure to benzene, particularly in the workplace.
